BUDAPEST WAGNER DAYS

One of the greatest dramaturgical feats in The Ring of the Nibelung is the chilling contrast between the jubilant ending of Siegfried and the foreboding suffocation of Götterdämmerung. In the last of the four music dramas, fate is fulfilled as the curse of the ring overtakes the unsuspecting young hero, who is ensnared by his enemies. With the death of Brünnhilde, riding her horse into the blazing funeral pyre, Wagner envisions the world in flames. However, the closing notes of the music drama bring the return of the all-pervading light of faith in rebirth.

Unlike Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, neither Siegfried nor Götterdämmerung were performed as an independent work in advance: their premieres took place at the opening of the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, when the entire tetralogy was staged for the first time in August 1876. Müpa Budapest first presented its complete Ring cycle in June 2008, and since then it has achieved fame around the world. One of the key factors behind this success is the varying cast of international-calibre principle singers, who have yielded some wonderful discoveries over the years. Other constants are the unified concept of Ádám Fischer’s musical direction and the unique visuals, rich in associations, that characterise Hartmut Schörghofer’s staging. Taking on the role of Siegfried in the 2024 Götterdämmerung is Stefan Vinke, with Birger Radde as Gunther and Jochen Schmeckenbecher as Alberich. Johan Schinkler will lend his voice for the dark part of Hagen, while Lilla Horti takes the stage as Gutrune. Iréne Theorin resumes her portrayal of Brünnhilde after Die Walküre, with Dorottya Láng bringing news of Wotan’s broken spear as Waltraute. The three Norns will be sung by Erika Gál, Judit Németh and Andrea Brassói-Jőrös, and the trio of Rhinemaidens by Orsolya Sáfár, Gabriella Fodor and Zsófia Kálnay.
