Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24

MODERN. GLORIOUS. POETRY.

Richard Strauss travelled to Budapest in December 1895 to conduct his own symphonic poem entitled ‘Death and Transfiguration’ at a concert also including works by Beethoven and Franz Liszt. Richard Strauss’ performance was preceded by heightened anticipation and contemporary newspapers devoted considerable space to his career until the event and, of course, to the concert itself. For a long time, Strauss was considered the most radical representative of modern music in Budapest. Young composers such as Béla Bartók and Arnold Schönberg fell under the spell of Strauss’ modernism for varying periods of time. One of the most mature works of Schönberg’s early compositional period entitled “Transfigured Night” is particularly close to Strauss’ musical world.
