The story of Princess Turandot is thought to have first been written by a Persian poet who lived in the 12th century, whose tale was then retold by Carlo Gozzi in the 18th century. It was this latter version that Puccini used as the basis for his libretto at the start of the 1920s. The Italian composer, who had already written several blockbuster operas, brought to life the cold-hearted and secretive princess, who sets deadly riddles to her admirers. Puccini ordered 13 specially-made gongs for the orchestra, and also incorporated three melodies from a music box presented to him by China's ambassador to Italy. Puccini was seriously ill as he worked on the opera, and it was eventually completed by Franco Alfano. Precarious circumstances, then, lie behind the creation of one of the most influential and thrilling works in the history of opera. Like so many works from Puccini, Turandot became such a hit that even today the immortal Italian composer's already sizeable legions of fans are being further swelled as the music features regularly in television talent contests.
One of the Metropolitan Opera's leading dramatic sopranos, Christine Goerke, will take the lead role in front of a stunning stage design featuring the picturesque and grandiose theatrical scenery of the legendary Franco Zeffirelli. Yusif Eyvazov will take to the stage as Goerke's partner in the role of Calàf. The role of the slave girl Liù will be brought to life through the beautiful voice of Eleonora Buratto, while Timur, the deposed King of Tartary, will be played by the outstanding American baritone James Morris, one of the core members of the company. The production will be conducted by the music director of the Metropolitan Opera, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, famed for his vibrant and majestic performances.
