The music of Latin and Mediterranean territory is a unique and individual world of musical sonority even if the composer is French (Fauré, Debussy) or Argentinian (Ginastera). Gabriel Fauré was the director of the Paris Conservatoire between 1905 and 1920, where his students included Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger, and he had a profound influence on the development of French music. In 1898 he wrote a three movement orchestral suite based on music he composed for Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama Pe...lléas et Mélisande. Claude Debussy himself wrote an opera based on this same Maeterlinck play, which consciously determined the era. The whole of Debussy’s oeuvre defines or launches however an era: we know him as one of the cradles of 20th century music with his surprising sonorities built on subtle effects and a unique harmonic world. Images Pour Orchestre was written between 1916 and 1920 and evokes the musical souls of different peoples. Gigues is English, Ibéria Spanish while Rondes de printemps turns to French folklore. Alberto Ginastera was a passionate and committed populariser of Argentinean folk music in his early creative period. He said about his work written in 1965: “My Harp Concerto comprises of three movements. The first […] has a sonata form and several of its elements concentrate on the recapitulation and the coda. The second movement […] has a four part A–B–C–A form. The form of the final movement […] is an introduction and rondo. The introduction is a long cadenza for solo harp; in the rondo there are recognisable rhythmic elements of Argentinean music”.
