Grieg-András Vass
String Quartet in G minor - version for symphony orchestra
No, this isn't a case of mobile technology invading the concert hall - we're still asking everyone to turn off their telephones. Instead, this concert features two works in the key of G major, followed by another in G minor after the intermission.
Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite is perhaps only rivalled in popularity by his piano concerto. This Piano Concerto in G major, however, belongs to Ravel, and of course, to the outstanding Croatian pianist Lazić Dejan. The second part of the concert will be a truly uncommon experience as András Vass conducts his own transcription of Grieg's String Quartet in G minor. Born in Croatia in 1977 but now based in Amsterdam, Lazić Dejan has performed highly acclaimed concerts from São Paulo to Tokyo and has more than 50 albums and numerous prestigious awards to his name. He is certain to fare differently with Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major than its composer did: Ravel originally wrote the work to perform himself, but it ended up proving too difficult for him. Rich in sound and broad gestures, Grieg's String Quartet in G minor practically begs to be scored for orchestra - and this will be a first opportunity to hear how it sounds that way.
"In physics, it is a fact that energy can be neither created nor destroyed: this is the law of conservation of energy. It music, it seems, energy flow is present, and as a performer, you have to let it happen. Of course, that's the most difficult part: it cannot and must not be forced. But when it happens, it is the greatest experience that an artist can have.” (Dejan Lazić)
