There is no point searching for a work entitled Vespro di Pasqua in the catalogue of Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643). What the curious music-lover will find, however, is his most significant sacred work, the Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers of the Blessed Virgin), one of the most beautiful and grandiose liturgical compositions ever written. Taking this as his model, the world-renowned Italian conductor, harpsichordist and musicologist Andrea Marcon has compiled the Baroque concert programme entitled Vespro di Pasqua, which reimagines the magnificent Easter Vespers of Venice’s St Mark’s Basilica, drawing above all on works by Monteverdi and his contemporaries Giovanni Gabrieli, Francesco Usper and Alessandro Grandi. The historically informed performance workshop La Cetra Barockorchester & Vokalensemble Basel, founded in 1999, has been working under Marcon’s direction since 2009.
