Symphony No. 9 in D minor, WAB 109

János Kovács, the permanent conductor of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is turning 70 this year. At a celebratory concert being held in his honour, he himself will conduct two truly challenging Late Romantic compositions that are nevertheless dreamlike in their beauty: Wagner's overture to Meistersinger and Bruckner's final symphony. Performing as the soloist in Carl Reinecke's Flute Concerto in D major between the two symphonic pieces will be the world renowned Emmanuel Pahud.

Reinecke was well into his 80s in 1908 when he wrote this work. The work is considered by many to be the final hurrah of the Mendelssohnian spirit, which was certainly not unrelated to the fact that Reinecke had spent more than three decades conducting Leipzig's Gewandhaus Orchestra, whose reputation had been established by Mendelssohn himself. A few years ago, the world-famous flautist Emmanuel Pahud recorded Reinecke's concerto in addition to pieces by 20th-century composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki and Tōru Takemitsu, which he believes show the power of dreams with extraordinary evocativeness. Conducted by Kovács, the piece will be performed between two Late Romantic compositions that are a real challenge for the conductor and his orchestra, the opening overture to Wagner's Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Bruckner's final symphony.
