We welcome two ensembles that inhabit two very different musical worlds, and who now invite us on a wonderfully exciting adventure at their first concert at the Palace of Arts. The common denominator is that they are regarded as among the finest in their respective fields and they both enjoy experimenting in music. Both groups have been performing since the 1970s in the United Kingdom, achieving international renown. The Hilliard Ensemble, named after an Elizabethan miniature painter, joined the... King’s Singers when they were formed as all male ensembles exploring early music. They differed in that the four British singers became apostles of new music: their greatest success was with their album made jointly with Norwegian jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek in 1993. Since then, they have performed works by other leading contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Cage, Giya Kancheli and Heinz Holliger. The Arditti Quartet is also closely connected to contemporary music. Founded by Irvine Arditti who still leads the quartet, it remains one of the most important such ensembles in the history of contemporary music. Virtually all the major names have written pieces for them to première (Ligeti, Kurtág, Elliott Carter, Feldman, Gubaydulina, Kagel, Lachenmann, Stockhausen and Xenakis to name just a few). In 1999, they were awarded the “Musical Nobel Prize” of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation.
