“To play great music, you must keep your eyes on a distant star!” This quote from Yehudi Menuhin might easily serve as the motto of the violin gala to be presented to the audience on International Music Day, featuring performers selected specially for the occasion. The concert is a salute to just such a “distant star,” Menuhin himself, whom we must thank not only for the creation of this special day but also for the ideas that permit four strikingly different soloists to appear on the same stage... and play together in perfect harmony. Barnabás Somogyi, a student of the School for Exceptional Young Talents of Franz Liszt Academy of Music, will perform Telemann’s Fantasia No. 1 in B-flat major; while Barnabás Kelemen plays Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major accompanied by the Ferenc Erkel Chamber Orchestra. Lajos Kathy Horváth – a one-time student and teaching assistant of Menuhin – will perform music by Sarasate and contemporary improvisations in collaboration with pianist Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, before the line-up is completed by Félix Lajkó, whose new album has risen to the top of the World Music Chart Europe. The goal of the concert’s organizers is to create a genuine musical celebration worthy of the memory and spirit of Yehudi Menuhin, as well as to support the MUS-E (Musique-Europe) project in Hungary in its jubilee year, another initiative of Menuhin launched in Europe 20 years ago. The goal of the multicultural model programme for the arts is to foster acceptance, creativity and self-expression through the arts, primarily among vulnerable or severely disadvantaged children in the 6–12 age group. Rather than artistic education for the elite, Menuhin’s dream was to launch a social endeavour taking advantage of the power of the arts to build and shape character. With more than 50,000 participating children in approximately 400 schools in 12 European countries, and involving a thousand artists, the programme is coordinated by the Brussels-based International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation.
