“Loved to the gallows” could be an alternative title of Umberto Giordano’s opera, which serves up a grand historical tableau, a love that even defies death, and, last but not least, three brilliant leading roles. Returning to the MET stage in Nicolas Joël’s visually striking 1996 production, this masterpiece features Piotr Beczała – an absolute star of the global broadcasts – as the titular poet executed by the Jacobins. Joining him as Maddalena is the internationally acclaimed diva, Sonya Yoncheva, who captivated Müpa audiences with a memorable aria recital not long ago. The baritone lead role of Carlo Gérard, a lackey turned revolutionary people’s tribune, is brought to life by the commanding figure of Igor Golovatenko in this production, which will be led with effervescent energy of conductor Daniele Rustioni.
The broadcast will be sung in the original language, and shown with Hungarian and English subtitles.
The ‘Metropolitan Opera Live in HD’ transmissions have been made possible through the cooperation of our partner, liveincinema.eu s.r.o.
