Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248 (excerpts)
A CAST OF 200. THE BETHLEHEM STORY.
This staged production brings the Bethlehem story to life with the help of Mary, Joseph, the three wise men of the east, the evangelist and the angels. Johann Sebastian Bach composed a cantata for each feast day of the Christmas season, often incorporating elements from earlier works. Completed in 1734, Bach himself regarded this cantata cycle as an oratorio, and posterity has embraced it as one of the most captivating and monumental compositions of his oeuvre, alongside his two Passion settings. The work was first performed in Hungary over Christmas 1926, nearly a century ago. The daily newspaper Pesti Napló described it as a heart- and soul-rending miracle with an infinitely pure resonance that was received by audiences as a true gift.
