Conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt Featuring: Julia Kleiter, Elisabeth von Magnus, Kurt Streit, Anton Scharinger – singers, Arnold Schoenberg Choir (choirmaster: Erwin Ortner) Schwingt freudig euch empor, BWV 36 Ach, wie flüchtig, ach, wie nichtig, BWV 26 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140 It is no exaggeration to say that Nikolaus Harnoncourt is one of the most influential figures in modern performance practise. The secret of his revelatory interpretations is his ability to approach a score as if seeing it for the first time. He is now one of the greatest conductors who frequently works with modern instrument orchestras as well, and is happy to programme anything from Monteverdi to Bartók, and anything in between. His unparalleled knowledge of styles is entirely supported by contemporary documents and this was the guiding principal behind his ensemble, founded with his wife from musicians at the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 1953, the period style Concentus Musicus Wien. They opened a new chapter in performance history. The orchestra’s repertoire emphasises Renaissance and Baroque music: they often have performed works that were otherwise forgotten, proving on several occasions that these pieces were also masterpieces. Between 1970 and 1989, conducted by Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, the orchestra recorded all of Bach’s cantatas, including (naturally!) those heard in today’s concert. The cantata BWV 36 was written for the first Sunday in Advent, numbers 26 and 140 were for the 24th and 27th Sunday after the Holy Trinity festival respectively. Harnoncourt has frequently worked with today’s soloists. Julia Kleiter performed at the Graz Styriarte festival which Harnoncourt founded. She also played Pamina in a production this February at the Zurich Opera House of The Magic Flute with Harnoncourt conducting. Bernarda Fink is a true world star and can often be heard in oratorios with the Austrian master. Kurt Streit has also partnered Harnoncourt in several Mozart stage works; Anton Scharinger’s international career was also launched by Mozart operas (The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute) conducted by Harnoncourt.
