“Igor Levit is like no other pianist,” wrote The New Yorker. Indeed, few other performers can play three Prokofiev concertos on two consecutive days, and then two more at the third concert, including a composition written only for the left hand. Bookending this virtuoso test of strength coupled with deep emotions and passion are an opera suite and a symphony. It was Prokofiev himself who created a six-movement orchestral excerpt from his comedy The Love for Three Oranges, just as he was the one who added the evocative ‘classical’ sobriquet to his First Symphony.
