Ruslan and Lyudmila – Overture

Alexey Rybnikov

Cello Concerto

Rachmaninoff

Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13

What is Russian symphonic music like? Grandiose, emotional, melancholic, or perhaps overly brash? This concert offers a sweeping panorama of Russian national music, stretching from its very beginnings right up to the present day, so it will almost certainly bring us closer to answering the question at hand. Glinka was one of the first great Russian composers. Ever since he wrote Ruslan and Lyudmila, his work has proclaimed the triumphant power of love and reconciliation. Rachmaninoff, who lived through the turn of the century, embodies precisely what audiences today adore and what his contemporaries held against him: free-flowing romantic emotions. The success of Alexey Rybnikov, one of the most sought-after living Russian composers, can be attributed to the way his music brings together the Russian romantic tradition, the influences of the modern age, and the new technologies with which people now listen to music.
