Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64
Mahler
Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor
The programme for the Budapest Festival Orchestra’s first Müpa Budapest concert of 2025 brings us Mendelssohn’s world-famous violin concerto and a Mahler symphony that is not only one of his most positive in outlook, it is also very likely his most popular as well. The soloist for the concerto, Renaud Capuçon, summons forth on his 1737 Guarneri violin his profound and nuanced timbres and virtuosity, admired by both audiences and critics alike. Up after the intermission will be “one of the seven wonders of the symphonic world” – as Mahler’s Fifth was termed after its 1904 world premiere in Cologne. The Adagietto, which took on a life of its own with the film adaptation of Death in Venice, served as the encore to the BFO’s very first concert back in 1983.
