Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067
Beethoven
III. (c-moll) zongoraverseny, op. 37
Rachmaninoff
Symphony No. 2 in E minor, op. 27
"This piece is sacred for flute players,” says Iván Fischer of the Orchestral Suite No. 2. Energetic and rich in character, this work is a perfect vehicle for flautists to show off their technical skills, even in music of such grace, delicacy and charm.
Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, which is featured at this concert and the subject of one the BFZ's most successful CDs, is another piece that was not easy to bring into the world. The composer's first symphony was received so poorly that the failure cast him into a deep depression that was only alleviated by the success of his second. Although this Romantic piece predates the first sound film by some time, many people feel that its effect is similar to that of film music.
