Harmonielehre

For this concert, Julian Rachlin, the world-famous Lithuanian-born violin and viola player known for his frenetic style and deep musical sensibility, will perform Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto. Bartók started work on the piece in July 1945, and it was the only music he wrote for the viola as a solo instrument. Bartók was in the final stage of illness when he set about writing this, his final work, passing away two months later. Although he declared the piece finished in a letter, it transpired after he passed away that the manuscript comprised 16 pages of drafts and that the instrumentation was missing entirely. The Viola Concerto was known to the world for decades in the form prepared by Tibor Serly between October 1946 and autumn 1948.

Standing at the helm of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the internationally renowned American conductor, who is musical director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and lead conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will conduct compositions that are connected to Hungary to prove that music does have a universal language. Considered a true cosmopolitan when it comes to 20th-century music, Robertson keeps the works of such masters on his repertoire as Boulez, Adams, Reich, and Sylvestrov.
