Aleko - concert performance of the opera
Shai Wosner, who was born in Israel and lives in the United States, was instilled with a love for Hungarian music at a young age, with the Hungarian-born composer André Hajdu being one of his mentors. Over his career he has been the guest of such world-famous ensembles as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
Critics worldwide have praised his rendering of Schubert, and in 2013 he released Signs, Games + Messages, a record of the works of Bartók, Kurtág and Janáček. Beethoven's music is of particular importance for him, and in the 2015-2016 concert season he and violinist Jennifer Koh continue the series dedicated to him (Bridge to Beethoven). In the second part of the concert Rachmaninoff's youthful one-act opera can be heard. The title role of Aleko was once sung by Feodor Chaliapin, while in Budapest it will be performed by one of today's most in-demand Russian basses, Dmitri Ulyanov.
