Symphony No 9, Op. 125

This programme spans centuries and juxtaposes a series of emblematic – and at the same time, sublime – works. Ricercar a 6, one of Bach’s greatest achievements here being performed as arranged for orchestra by Anton Webern, will immediately be followed by an exalted symphonic meditation from the 20th century. Olivier Messiaen’s composition attempts to evoke humankind’s forgotten sacrifice of Christ. György Ligeti’s 1962 work Poème symphonique, is mischievous even in its title, as it has nothing to do with a symphony orchestra or a symphonic poem in the genre sense used by Liszt. The concert’s monumental finale features the Kodály Choir of Debrecen in the leading role; powering the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, they will be joined by Concerto Budapest, conducted by András Keller, and joined by four superb soloists.
