Mahler

Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor

The ‘prince of violin concertos’, along with the symphony whose Adagietto movement is so ideally beautiful, the American producers of the classic Visconti film Death in Venice are said to have exclaimed: “Who is this Mahler? Can we sign him on?” It is these two masterpieces, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, that comprise the programme for this concert, and no matter how often these core elements of the standard repertoire are played in concert halls, the evening still promises to be a revelatory experience.

After all, the two central figures at the concert are Kossuth Prize-winner András Keller and the outstanding Italian-German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich. Boasting a Grammy among his many awards, the latter is not only a globally sought-after soloist, but also an expert analyst on the Beethoven concerto we will hear on this evening. And Concerto Budapest and its leader have long been dedicated and skilled performers of the famous Adagietto – as they are of Mahler’s symphonic oeuvre in general – revealing new colours and layers in the works to us every single time. On this occasion, presumably the features of the Fifth Symphony linked to Beethoven will be among those highlighted, since the newly married Mahler, who confessed his love for his young wife through this work, repeatedly cited his great predecessor’s ‘Fate Symphony’ sharing the same number as an influential model.

Forming an integral part of the concerts held as part of the INZERT series held by Concerto Budapest in conjunction with the Örkény Theatre during the 2023/24 season will be texts performed by members of the company that are related to the musical works in the programmes in terms of content, mood and/or evoking the spirit of the times. The 28 May performance features Pál Mácsai.
