W. A. Mozart: Piano Concerto in C major, K. 467 Symphony in G minor, K. 550 Piano Concerto in C minor, K. 491 As he said in an interview, András Schiff feels that it is quite different conducting his favourite works than playing them on the piano. His desires to perform orchestral works led to an inner determination to enter a relationship with them from the conductor’s podium. Additionally, during the rehearsals of Bach and later, the Mozart piano concertos, he could discuss the details... of each work with the members of the orchestra – particularly in the absence of the conductor. So encouraged by the musicians, he decided to try his luck when he formed his own orchestra in 1999 from a group of supremely gifted instrumental musicians. The orchestra is an Italian translation of his name and they performed the Bach St Matthew Passion and the B minor mass, then Mozart’s Cosí Fan Tutte as well as all the piano concertos. The works on this evening’s programme were written in Vienna between 1785 and 1788, after Mozart had terminated his job with the Salzburg Archbishops and was working as a freelancer in the Imperial capital. His popularity reached a new zenith and the bubbling musical life demanded he write ever new works. Mozart soon found himself organising his own concerts as well. He wrote many of his piano concertos for these events where of course, he was also the soloist. The so-called “Great” Symphony in G minor is the middle one of his final symphonies, which he penned in a mere six weeks. It represents the climax of his symphonic oeuvre. Its harmonic daring and melodic extravagance made it an avant-garde work for its time, which because of its melancholic and bitter sweet mood, is now regarded as one of Mozart’s most moving works.
