It is often said that artistic trends repeat themselves in cycles of twenty years or so. If we accept the truth of this view, then one would be hard pressed to find a better example than Oi Va Voi, who did much to shape the pop music sound of the turn of the millennium. And what genre do they work in? A music critic would have to be pretty agile to answer that question. One thing is certain: in addition to drawing from electronica, hip hop, world music, alternative rock and indie folk, their songs also ‘exult in the sorrow’ of the world of Eastern European melodies, with a heavy dose of klezmer madness as well, while their unusual playing style is still capable of immediately bringing on a case of the goosebumps. After two and a half decades of vibrant stage energy, five studio albums and one Hungarian-language hit, the band is coming to Müpa Budapest with their latest album, which will be released in April.
