Much like buildings, musical works are also made up of tiny building blocks – sounds, timbres, rules, and the playful breaking of those rules. The Sound Castle series focuses on these building blocks, from which we will, on this occasion, assemble forms of folk music.
The first stop in the folk music round of the series takes us back to the very beginning: to the sounds of humans and nature. How did speech turn into song, and song into music? How were simple melodies supplemented with rhythm instruments? We will discover how the jaw harp, the flute, the bagpipe, and the zither work; we will learn what a burdon is; and also discover how the flute and the gardon, as well as the hurdy-gurdy and the clarinet, sound together in pairs. András Bergics and László Szlama are versatile instrumentalists and excellent performers: in a playful and accessible way, they will introduce the audience to the world of solo and duo forms in folk music.
