Schubert

Symphony No. 9 in C major (‘Great’), D. 944

At 88, perhaps the last representative of a towering generation, Zubin Mehta is one of the finest conductors of our time. His versatility in terms of both genre and style, along with the directness and expressive power of his music, are legendary – as is the deep sense of humanism that he represents. Founded by Daniel Barenboim in 1999 and consisting mainly of Middle Eastern and Spanish-speaking musicians, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, also travels the world as an ambassador of humanity, in the spirit of artistic perfectionism and tolerance towards each other. Their programme of Beethoven and Schubert – the former’s ‘Pastoral’ Sixth Symphony in F major and the latter’s ‘Great’ Ninth Symphony in C major, both compositions from the borderland between Viennese Classicism and nascent Romanticism – promises to be an unforgettable experience.
