Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47

Bartók

The Wooden Prince, Op. 13, Sz. 60, BB 74

During his 92 years, Sibelius broke new ground for Finnish music on the international scene. He lived through the last great blossoming of Romanticism, experienced the melancholy of its passing, and embarked on a search for new paths. Born into an age of turmoil, Bartók discovered entirely new musical potential in folk music even as his homeland was battered by the storms of history. Valse triste and the Violin Concerto draw on the brooding mood of the north, while Bartók muses on the world of fairy tales as he lays bare his own contradictory relationship with the reality surrounding him. What do these works say to you?
