14 Images for Orchestra – Hungarian premiere
This Russian-themed concert opens with a 19th-century classic, a pleasingly elegant waltz fantasy Glinka originally composed for piano and later adapted for orchestra. Next up will be two Hungarian premieres of works composed by Mikhail Pletnev. Best known as a pianist, but also an accomplished composer and conductor, tonight he will take his baton back up first for a piece he wrote specifically for the extraordinary abilities of his Russian countryman Sergei Nakariakov, who has been described as the Paganini of the trumpet. The second, after the intermission, will be his 14 Images for Orchestra.
