Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 6 in B minor (‘Pathétique’), Op. 74
“Oh, you men who think or say that I am malevolent, stubborn or misanthropic, how greatly do you wrong me!” wrote the 32-year-old Beethoven in his Heiligenstadt Testament. Throughout his life, he strived to express how full of love for humanity and the joy of life he was in spite of all the tragedies fate had dealt him. His violin concerto is one of the most beautiful examples of this effort. The Pathétique Symphony was Tchaikovsky’s final work. If we pay sufficient attention, we can read in it the heartbreaking farewell letter of a person who is about to die. This evening is an opportunity to hear two profound confessions.
