Laurent Barbolosi – vocals, violin, trumpet, Jérôme Casalonga – vocals, soprano saxophone, Nicolas Debelle – bass guitar, Anton’ Giulio Galeandro – harmonica, Vincent Géraldi – drums, balafon, Jacques Nobili – trombone Corsica is not the only place where one can find polyphonic singing but the tradition there is far stronger than in Sardinia, France or Spain. We should think of it in terms of stories being sung by three pairs of voices, with one pair each representing the upper, middle and lowe...r register. On the island of Corsica this is a characteristic male activity. This strictness has now been relaxed and female groups have emerged, as well as formations accompanied by instruments who aim to make the tradition a little more easily digestible. The leading example of this is the group Zamballarana. The name means a magical, demonic woman: someone who can enchant, arouse dizzying emotions and for whom men would willingly die. Needless to say, the music of this band, which has been together since 1997, is brimming with similar tension. The group enraptures the listener with painful ballads, soothes them with the soft spirit of the Mediterranean, and does so in a very characteristic sound in which the old and the new, the vocal and the instrumental tradition, folk music and jazz, Corsican and Latin music, all appear in a fusion. Zamballarana have visited Hungary before but their concerts are very rare. Afterwards, it is almost obligatory to buy their four released records – Zamballarana, Lucia, Luna, Camina.
