Jazz Legends

No group in music history has enjoyed a career comparable to that of The Manhattan Transfer. Not only are their successes unmatched, it is also impossible to describe the experience of attending their performances. This experience is one we can now enjoy for the last time, because after more than 50 years of activity, the vocal ensemble is bidding adieu to its fans for good. On their farewell tour, they will be waving goodbye in worthy fashion, with loads of hits and heartfelt melodies.

Since first forming in 1972, they have written history in the jazz and pop worlds. Taking tunes from the '40s in both genres and repopularising them among audiences of the '70s and '80s, they launched a new renaissance of vocal traditions by combining modern R&B and pop elements with their amazingly masterful harmonisations and informal performance style. The list of artists they have worked alongside includes Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Phil Collins, BB King and many others. These Vocal Group Hall of Fame inductees have recorded a total of 29 albums, garnering them 20 Grammy nominations and 11 awards. Their latest one came last year for their album Fifty, a celebration of their 50-year career featuring the WDR Funkhausorchester. The selection of ten songs makes for a wonderful repository of the quartet's stylistic diversity, and the accompaniment of a full orchestra enriches the ensemble's already impressive harmonic techniques with spectacular ideas for arranging the music. The career-capping album will be followed by a final tour in late 2023, ending on 15 December at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. It is a great pleasure and honour for us to have them include Müpa Budapest as one of their stops, returning to perform here for the first time in seven years at the end of November. With their easy professionalism and lovable personality, they will surely leave a lasting mark on the souls of the audience joining them in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
