Lőrinc Barabás is someone who truly brings both people and forms of music closer together, regardless of whether we are talking about the diverse range of genres that fit him so perfectly, the leading lights working in them, or celebrated Hungarian and international artists. This time around, the rapport he will be establishing will be between creative artists and the audience when he takes the stage of the Festival Theatre with a programme of both familiar songs and brand-new ones composed specifically for this concert to present to fans in the Müpa Budapest car park.
For more than a decade, the name Lőrinc Barabás has been a concept all its own on the Hungarian music scene. Nearly everything started in 2005: that was when he not only founded the first group to form under his own leadership, Barabás Lőrinc Eklektric, he would also launch the improv concert series Random Szerda, achieve cinematic success with The Uptown Felaz and join Irie Maffia. Over the years, he has performed with such artists as Valerie June, Bonobo, Nicola Conte, Erik Truffaz, Parov Stelar, Nils Petter Molvær and Takuya Kuroda. It was with the latter that he made his most recent appearance at Müpa Budapest for the album release concert of the Barabás Lőrinc Quartet, which he founded in 2015. With a sound combining instrumental pop with jazz and elements of world and classical music, the quartet has come out with two records so far: 2016's Beardance and the 2018 release Other Than Unusual. Original drummer Zsolt Nagy was later replaced in the line-up by Ábel Mihalik. So why is it '+2'? Because in addition to playing material from the two albums they have come out with so far at this special concert, they will also have some surprises in store for the audience and - quite unusually for the quartet - be joined by two guests on stage: the epochal saxophonist István Grencsó, a key figure in the Hungarian 'free music' scene, and the young and increasingly sought-after singer Flóra Kiss.
