The Jazz Spring festival has always endeavoured to present the most promising female performers from the international jazz scene, regardless of whether the artists are singers, instrumentalists or both at the same time. The multiple award-winning Canadian Laila Biali is an example of the latter category. What is more, she is now more than simply a promising talent, having already worked with such artists as Sting, Suzanne Vega, Dave Brubeck and Chris Botti. Joining Biali and her trio as a guest for this show is Kornél Fekete-Kovács, affording us a chance to delight in watching performers play together who share an exceptionally creative and sunny outlook on life.
Biali was not yet five years old when she started playing the piano and found that mastering the instrument came so easily that she stuck with it from then on. Her fascination with jazz emerged during her conservatory years, and she released her first trio album at the age of 23. The breakthrough star soon went on to win everything there was to win in her native country: SOCAN (essentially the Canadian equivalent of Artisjus) recognised both her compositional and instrumental work, and she also received a JUNO Award, considered Canada’s Grammy, for her 2019 album. Her 2013 record Live In Concert was listed as one of the best of the year by DownBeat magazine. The warm sound of her crystal-clear voice and her unique sense for discovering entertaining yet demanding musical approaches attracted the attention of several international stars – with Sting, for example, inviting her to sing on his series of American television recordings and his 2009 concert DVD A Winter’s Night: Live from Durham Cathedral. Biali now has seven solo records under her belt. The audience at Müpa Budapest will get a taste of the fruits of her work over recent years, primarily the material from Your Requests, released in 2023. It is Biali’s hope that everyone attending her concert will get the feeling that all of their wishes are satisfies on this evening.
