The world has been celebrating the genre jazz for more than a century in practice, and in the manner enshrined by UNESCO for 13 years now. Müpa Budapest always goes all out on International Jazz Day, because on 30 April, it – and jazz fans – will soon be celebrating with not just one concert, but three. In the afternoon, the young bands that won the jury and audience awards at Jazz Showcase will play consecutively in the Festival Theatre. Then, from 8 pm, Hungary’s number one mixed a cappella jazz group, Jazzation, invites you on a journey through time with their spectacular, instructive and uplifting show.
This vocal group never fails to impress audiences at their regularly sold-out concerts with their unique arrangements of well-known jazz standards and extremely diverse repertoire of folk music, as well as with their own compositions and even those of their most famous international counterparts, from Bobby McFerrin to the a cappella great The Real Group. Conceived by Katus Várallyay nearly two decades ago, the quintet have taken first prize at a cappella competitions held in Graz, Leipzig, Aarhus and Pinerolo, in addition to winning the audience prize at the Independent Music Awards. This time, they are aiming to win the favour of the Müpa Budapest audience with a brand new show – one made all the more vibrant by projections and painstaking dramaturgy and relating the adventurous story of the Hungarian-born ‘jazz baroness’ Pannonica Rothschild. Featured in the programme are both songs written specifically for ‘Nica’ and compositions by musicians like Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, whom she took under her wing before they became legends of jazz history, meaning that the decades of the golden age of jazz will practically come to life on the stage.
