Gábor Gadó Quintet
7 October 2020, Wednesday
6 pm - 7:30 pm
Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest

One of the most outstanding guitarists on the Hungarian jazz scene, Gábor Gadó has also earned widespread recognition on the international music stage alongside noted musicians from both Hungary and abroad. His last appearance at Müpa Budapest took place in 2011, when he played together with saxophonist Dave Liebman, making it high time for him to perform a concert here with the excellent Hungarian instrumentalists of the Gábor Gadó Quintet. Also appearing in the performances of this musician whose world is distinctively his own and who conveys vibrations are classical works played in his own unique interpretation.

Not only is Gadó one of Hungary's most prominent jazz luminaries, his guitar playing is highly esteemed on the global arena as well, as attested to by - for example - the fact that France's Académie du Jazz awarded him its Prix Bobby Jaspar in 2003, which it annually bestows on its European jazz musician of the year. The albums he has recorded with BMC Records both as a soloist and as part of the Gábor Gadó Quartet and Unit, along with other guest artists, reveal his constant ability to surprise as well as the intimate musicianship for which he is known. His Hungarian quintet have been making music together for a good while now: the outstanding pair of wind instrumentalists of János Ávéd and Kristóf Bacsó are inspired company for Gadó's guitar playings, as is the superb rhythm section composed of double bassist Balázs Horváth and drummer András Halmos. At Müpa Budapest, however, we have not yet had the occasion to immerse ourselves in the quintet's European traditions, and specifically in their artistic work built on classical musical traditions. Whatever emerges from Gadó's impressive body of output and unique perspective, it is guaranteed to be the distillation of intellect and music that he is well known for.
