Ever since 2008, Müpa Budapest has regularly organised its gala programme of Hungarian folk music, and 2023 will be no exception when it presents the diversity of Hungarian musical folk traditions, from dance house music to world music productions. Before the evening concert, the mini-festival kicks off with Éva Páll's children's show Fine Craftsmanship. The evening gala - Branka Básits, Sára Tímár, Mihály Borbély Polygon, Magyar Banda, Kanizsa Csillagai and MORDÁI - will be preceded in the afternoon by a Gypsy dance house (led by Zsolt Khamoro and Zsolt Farkas), and followed in the late evening by a Hungarian one (with the Budapest Mezőség Band and Máté Kalász).
The Khamoro Budapest Band and Zsolt Farkas will have everyone dancing at the afternoon Gypsy dance house, with the Budapest Mezőség Band and Máté Kalász hosting the evening's closing Hungarian one. What the 2023 Folk Music Festival will showcase in full, though, is the diversity of Hungarian folk music, with among its many other strands on display, South Slavic being represented, even through gala is hosted by Gábor Eredics of the legendary band Vujicsics. Before the two-part programme in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, the audience is invited to attend a Gypsy dance house session in the Foyer from 6 pm. The aim of the Khamoro Budapest Band is to collect, preserve, pass on and present on stage the authentic Gypsy culture of Hungary and Central Europe, and in this spirit, through the dance lessons of bandleader Zsolt Farkas help, us learn worlds that are traditional in every sense. After the evening's two-part concert, the fun will continue in the Foyer from 10 pm with the dance house held by the Budapest Mezőség Band. The members of the group, who have been playing mainly at dance houses for more than ten years, are connected by both the music of Magyarpalatka and longstanding friendships. As well, of course, by the joy of making music at such dance houses, with its back-and-forth flow of energy.
