This year, on the precise date of this event, one of Hungary's greatest and best-known directors, the creator of countless films and television programmes, celebrates his 90th birthday. We too will be toasting Károly Makk, the director, screenwriter and actor who, following a career spanning the entire post-war renewal of Hungarian film, has been recognised with the title of Artist of the Nation, in addition to winning both the Kossuth and Béla Balázs prizes. To capture some defining moments of his life and remember the cinematic masterpieces of nearly seven decades of work, the master's friends and colleagues will be saluting him with music, poetry, personal reminiscences, film clips and many other surprises.
