An artist is meant to delight, and not to explain The shared exhibition of world famous photographer Martin Szipal and three of his apprentices – Virág Lajti, Éva Fekete and Bálint Börzsey – will open on November 8 at the Palace of Arts. The exhibition will be opened by the artist’s friend, Pál Heim. “When Martin Szipal left Hungary in 1956 and fate guided him overseas, he could hardly have imagined that a few decades later he would be selected among the ten best portrait photographers in the ...world. His vastly successful career is permeated with positive thinking and passion. And why do we like his photos? Because his works reflect a kind of impenetrable elegance that conveys the no frills harmony of creation, and because they express the creative man’s humility even towards his own talent. As one of the most open voiced critics of pseudo-art that needs explanation, Martin Szipal is also a sort of renaissance personality, who perfected his art with meticulous and persistent experimentation. His masterpieces have unmatched clarity of composition and exude truly close to ephemeral peace, yet he still prefers to put his students in the spotlight, not himself. Those who receive the gift of talent from life will also receive the gift of photography’s secret codes as Szipál apprentices. Looking at Virág Lajti’s works one has the feeling of hearing the thoughts of the people appearing in the photo, her pictures grab moments in life when the model is not a tool for the artist’s self-expression, rather the star of the image. Her photographs are coined with exceptional talent, since regardless of the people portrayed, the monumental fresco of life as a whole can also be glimpsed at the freeze-frame moment of creation. Éva Fekete’s paints her photos with unusually refined shadows and seek the hidden beauty of life; she sees the opportunity to convey deep truths and passions in her works, while her close to poetic view truly demands that her audience uses their imagination to conjure some specific story where all feelings play a role. Buildings and building parts that perhaps impact our personal living sphere the most are the central subjects of Bálint Börzsey’s works, whose minimalist approach has a thought-provoking and suggestive effect on the beholder. The photos delve right through to the core of the buildings, as if the very eyes of the architect were to glance through these photographs composed with cunning sensitivity.” Pál Heim Organiser: Martin Szipal and his apprentices
