Károly Makk made his name as a director with Liliomfi, showing – as Péter Bacsó put it – that “emulsion flows in his veins.” His formal language, however, would emerge in another masterpiece. In 1956, he filmed the Hungarian Uprising from a tank, while at the same time writing the screenplay for The House under the Rocks together with Sándor Tatay. “In this story, there is not only a tension between characters: something breaks loose.
