Of the two short stories by Tibor Déry that serve as the literary source for this film, Szerelem recalls the show trials of the 1950s, while Két asszony (Two Women) describes Déry’s own prison experiences in 1957 and the circumstances of his release. It was Károly Makk’s brilliant idea to combine the story of the condemned prisoner with that of his dying mother and the wife awaiting his release. In this way, the film could speak of political persecution within the context of private life.
