Early Music Festival

This exhibition offering insights into the work of one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time will be on display as part of Müpa Budapest's 2023 Early Music Festival for a week and a half from 24 February. Few others have understood the laws of how music operates better than Johann Sebastian Bach, whose counterpoint work continues to provide an unsurpassable model for generations of composers to this day. This exhibition put together by musicologist Gergely Fazekas guides visitors through the world of fugues, canons and symmetrical musical structures and into the pure intellectual space of music steered by mathematical relationships. Helping visitors to gain an understanding of the thinking of what may have been the most influential composer in European history will be a host of contemporary manuscripts, theoretical works, first-edition scores, illustrative diagrams and explanations and, naturally, musical passages. In connection with the exhibition, Fazekas will give a lecture entitled "J.S. Bach and Musical Perfection” in the Auditorium on 4 March at 6 pm. The lecture is free to attend, but prior registration is required.
