Arts in craft: Barnabás Rácz – double bass
February 12-July 1, 2010
12 February 2010 Friday
29 June 2010 Tuesday
Foyer

In 1493, the governor of Ferrara reported musicians who played „man sized” instruments in Rome. Although instruments have undergone numerous important changes over the last five hundred years – their size, their curves, the number of strings and material – there is no question that the governor was referring to the double bass. The first instrument that had all the characteristics of today’s double bass was made in the workshop of Gasparo da Salo in 1548. Thankfully, in recent decades the double bass has featured ever more frequently as a solo instrument and virtuosi perform pieces written for cello and even violin upon it. Master instrument-maker Barnabás Rácz has been involved in restoration and double bass construction since the 1980s and one of the highlights of his career came when he devoted several years to restoring a genuine da Salo double bass.
