Literarium – Contemporary Writers at Müpa Budapest

This year's Aegon Prize-winning Zsuzsa Takács is a captivating presence in contemporary Hungarian literature. She is one of those artists without whom the world would be a poorer place. In both her personality and her art, she exercises intellectual self-control over the delicate flutterings of the feminine spirit, while her imaginative world of broad perspectives is interwoven with artistic care and the discipline of polished form. Her first volume of poetry in 1970s, Némajáték, was one of the high points of modern Hungarian literature, and since that time, in volume after volume and in an infinitely clear, concise yet incredibly powerful and reverential language, she has consistently sought to bring the content of deeply suffered, serious events to the surface. The writing found in Zsuzsa Takács's superb volume of compiled poetry, A Vak Remény, published last year, is unique, peerless and captivating. With her enthralling personality, she speaks to and touches the reader so deeply that it cannot her work help but stay with you, as you experience the power in maintaining one's morals and solitude in the face of loss and loneliness. In this format, her poetry is not only worthy of admiration, it is also both moving and calming: her level-headed dramas provide something to hold onto, that living can help.
It will be an extraordinary experience to encounter her poetry in the company of her most authentic interpreter, Piroska Molnár, accompanied by the musician Tibor Szemző.
