The trumpet is constructed of tubing of varying cross-section bent twice into a rounded oblong shape, at one end of which is a mouthpiece, while the other end broadens into a funnel-like bell. It is made of brass or other copper alloy. Through the majority of its length the tubing is of uniform diameter, its narrow cross-section lending the instrument its clear, polished tone. The bell helps the sound radiate outwards while also playing a part in producing the tone. With the help of three valves, the tube and thereby the length of the column of air that vibrates within it can be changed, thus altering the pitch. Due to its timbre and virtuosity, the trumpet is also a popular instrument in jazz. The trombone is a brass instrument with a cup-shaped mouthpiece, with a range between that of the trumpet and the tuba. Its distinctive feature is a U-shaped moveable length of tubing known as the slide, with which the pitch of the instrument can be altered.
