How does that old folk nursery rhyme go? “There grows under heaven a southernwood, and on the southernwood grow twelve lovely branches, and on the twelve lovely branches grow 52 flowers, and on the 52 flowers grow three golden apples.” Although it may seem like a riddle, it is not: the numbers are about the different parts of the year. In this programme densely woven from fairy tales, music and the visual arts, the versatile folk singer Andrea Navratil takes us through the annual calendar, offering a new perspective on the great Christian holidays, from the joy of birth to the mystery of the resurrection to the coming of the Holy Spirit.
The Müpa Budapest audience, young and old alike, is already well familiar with the folk singer, storyteller, teacher and ecologist Andrea Navratil, who was recently recognised with the Liszt Award. Both adults and children are enchanted time and again by the supply and lusciously narrated tales and expressive singing voice of this amazingly vivacious artist. In her show There Grows Under Heaven she creates sheer magic on stage alongside two old confederates of hers. László Demeter, a Bartók Commemorative Award-winning folk musician and member of the band Kobzos, explores the ancient layers of Hungarian folk music and folk songs that have now been forgotten by urban dwellers, if they ever knew them at all. While he and Navratil create a world out of fairy tales, folk songs and traditional musical instruments on one side of the stage, working beside them in the volatile yet more obedient medium of sand is the puppeteer and sand artist Mari Sz. Nagy. In tandem with the capricious twists and turns of the story, the grains of sand tumbling between the fingers of the puppeteer are arranged in overlapping layers of sacred representational art. Created and disappearing into nothingness are images as exacting as fine arts pieces as we get to know one of the most archaic treasures of Hungarian cultural history, brought as close as possible through the skill of the collaborators.
