INSTRU-MENTOR

Featuring:

Guszti Balogh, Tibor Balogh, Gusztáv 'Csompi' Balogh

The stars of this series are the “tools” of music: its instruments. Children will get the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments in the context of authentic live music and with the assistance of expert musicians. In this semester we return to the world at large, introducing children to the folk music and rarely seen or heard instruments of various parts of the globe at concerts and subsequent presentations of musical instruments.
Originally intended only to store liquids, the Cegléd milk-can has been used as a rhythm instrument by Gypsy (Roma) musicians since the last third of the 20th century, using a variety of percussive methods. Although its inherent sonic possibilities have been exploited mainly in Roma music in Hungary, the instrument is also known in other parts of the world. By striking its mouth with the palm, the air inside is compressed and distorted, so that the can gives off a deep, hollow sound like a drum, while a higher, clinking noise can be produced by slapping the metal body.

Our partner in producing this series is the Ethnosound world music instrument shop.
