Jazz set off on its global journey from America to bewitch us all with its catchy melodies and virtuoso solos in the same way that it enchanted passengers on the steamboats of the Mississippi River. The secret lies in its playfulness, which is derived from the genre’s distinctive capacity for spontaneity. Improvisation is a truly serious game, whether it’s carried out by any kind of instrument or even that most ancient of musical devices – the one that resides in our throat. In this edition of our Instruments of Jazzland series, vocals take centre stage.
When journeying through the world of music, you can encounter a vast array of delights, and countless different genres. One of these genres, jazz, has such great diversity that everyone is sure to find something to their liking. At its birth, at the end of the 19th century, it was infantilised by many. Just like its older brother, the blues – from which it learned so much – jazz originated in New Orleans. As they developed and grew, however, it became clear that the two siblings were markedly different. The blues is typically more morose, with vocals of lamentation. Jazz, on the other hand, is joyful, playful, and cannot bear constraints. It is forever seeking the new, accumulating ever more elements of play. It is happy to be play alone, sometimes with friends, or even in a larger group. It has a character of moods: it loves to entertain the audience and encourage them to dance. At other times, it will help them to lose themselves in thought. But how do vocals contribute to jazz? How is rhythm created? In what way can the instruments ‘speak’ to each other, and why is it that jazz can, at times, strike the most profound chords of the soul? In Jazzland, all will be revealed – come join our expedition!
