"The hussar. If I only hear the name, the sweet sensation makes my spirit soar." Bertalan Szemere's rousing 1849 pamphlet is a paean to the soldiers of the famous light cavalry that remain a true Hungarian treasure, even today. In this concert from Andrea Navratil, who has countless ties to Hungarian folk culture and is a versatile creator, and her folk musician friends, the Békás Banda, we will see the horse and horserider - the gallant Hungarian hussar, take centre stage. Singing lessons, storytelling, folk tongue twisters and much more besides: let the dance begin!

We cannot help but briefly quote a former member of the Hungarian Committee for National Defence, Bertalan Szemere, to express the essence of the cult of the hussars: "The hussar is heir to the valiant courage of our forefathers. For a hussar, ten enemies is hardly enough, he would prefer 20; he knows no fear, lives on wine and praise, and sees death as but a pillow. He will sleep deeply, until the trumpets of resurrection see him rise once again." Mobile, rapid and surprisingly offensive hussar units appeared in historical sources as early as the Middle Ages. They often wreaked havoc among the enemy, and their unique tactics and fighting methods frequently earned praise for the Hungarian army. This interactive show, The Hussars Are Coming!, will focus on these exceptional, outstanding men. Through storytelling, dance and singing, our expert collaborators will evoke not just a lifestyle or an era, but an entire philosophy. Andrea Navratil, who is a well-known folk singer, teacher, storyteller and ecologist, needs no introduction for fans of folk culture at Müpa Budapest, as she has performed as a special guest of the Seven Kingdoms Dance House on a regular basis for many years. Joining her in this thrilling adventure in the footsteps of the hussars will be her old friends, the members of the Békás Banda, who play authentic Hungarian folk music.
