Rossini achieved everything that it was possible to achieve as a composer: He was the hottest topic in the salons and at the balls, among rich and poor, masters and servants. The debut of each new opera was eagerly awaited by thousands and announced on the front pages of the newspapers: Rossini work completed! And then he woke up one morning and decided to retire. To the kitchen. And lo and behold, even there he left a legacy. Now it is time for Cinderella to put on her apron once again and grab the wooden spoon. As we revisit this fairytale, we learn how a composer “cooks up” an opera. We all know that we will need a measure of love and evil, and a pinch of humour, but the real art is knowing how much of each to put into the great pot! Here, Rossini, the star chef of composers himself, reveals the secret recipe.
