The woodwinds are the most varied group of instruments in the symphony orchestra. The name is in truth misleading given that, of the woodwinds used today, both the flute and its little brother the piccolo are made of metal. Flutes also differ from the other members of the woodwind family, namely the clarinet, oboe and bassoon. With the latter, sound is produced through the vibration of one or two thin reeds housed in the mouthpiece, while the flutes and their relatives (for example the recorder)... contain no reed in the mouthpiece, instead generating sound when air blown into the instrument vibrates as it passes over a sharp edge.
