In György Fenyő D.’s unconventional literature classes, he invites students into dialogue as they explore how the works of Hungary’s national literary classics and contemporary authors are best read and interpreted. He brings these works to life, and makes them accessible to middle school students, reinterpreting them through a modern lens, and shedding new light on those figures and texts of Hungarian poetic history which have, at times, become mere icons engraved in our culture. He demonstrates that the oeuvres of the great poets of the past remain relevant when approached from new angles. And so it is that poets like Mihály Babits, Dezső Kosztolányi become our contemporaries (and maybe even close acquaintences), while the texts of Zsuzsa Rakovszky, along with other past and present authors, reveal new ways we can relate to lyrical texts. Our presenter, György Fenyő D., is a Hungarian teacher, literary historian and author of the books Útikalauz a vershez (Guide to Poetry) and Költőiskola (Poetry School), which are primarily aimed at middle school students.
