“Luca, Luca, kitty-kotty, tojjanak a tiktyok,” (Luca, Luca, click-cluck, your hens should lay their eggs) – in Hungary, if you prepare for the busy period at the end of the old year with this nursery rhyme, you should come to no harm in the new one. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves: the last two weeks of the year are the perfect time to digest all that has happened, take stock and make plans for the future. The period is also full of music, dance and fairytales, not to mention countless special and rare folk traditions that we would do well to remember.
Hungarian tradition once included numerous folk customs around the winter solstice on 21 December. Many Hungarian people today are still familiar with the rituals of St Lucy’s Day, Nativity plays and the minstrel singing tradition of “regölés”. Yet how many still remember the observance of St Barbara’s Day, the St Nicholas Day procession on 6 December, Christmas carolling, and the customs of distributing the Communion bread or carrying bundles of sticks, the blessing of St John’s Day, the Feast of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, or the various folk customs associated with New Year's Eve? Anyone who has not heard of these customs will now get a chance to learn about them from the children and youth groups of the Kistarcsa Pannonia Dance Ensemble, who will bound through the highlights of this highly eventful month in an hour-long show.
Zoltán “Batyu” Farkas, director, moderator and font of knowledge of folk traditions, will make sure we do not forget these winter customs.
